This Is the Tom Green Documentary

Directed by Tom Green himself, this documentary tells the story of a comic approach that began on a local cable channel in Canada in the nineties and spread worldwide through MTV. Green's shock comedy was built on pointing a camera at strangers in the street and turning discomfort into material, and much of today's internet humour repeats that form. The second half is far more personal. Green was diagnosed with testicular cancer at twenty-seven and broadcast his treatment on television. Here the documentary accepts two things at once: that the decision created awareness, and that it was the natural extension of a habit of turning his own life into a show. The final section covers his departure from Hollywood for a farm near Ottawa. Because Green directs his own film the distance narrows, so no critical portrait emerges; but the honesty he turns on himself goes further than expected. It was released on Prime Video in 2025. Who it's for: those who remember nineties television comedy and are curious about the origins of internet humour. Who it's not for: viewers expecting an objective biography; narrator, director and subject are the same person.
