What Tholi Prema Is About
Balu falls in love with Anu, who has come to her grandfather’s house from America. He even saves her life in an accident, and yet whatever he does he cannot bring himself to say what he feels; the film is about what that unsaid thing becomes over the years. A. Karunakaran wrote and directed it, building first love not as a story of union but as a story of absence. Deva wrote the music and Chota K. Naidu shot it. Released in July 1998, it was a large box office success and a turning point in Pawan Kalyan’s career, with Keerthi Reddy opposite him. It won the National Film Award for best feature film in Telugu and six Nandi awards.
