Thoongaavanam

Rajesh M. Selva's 2015 Tamil film follows an undercover police officer who has stolen a drug shipment. The gang's leader abducts his son and wants the goods back; the man spends the night in a club trying to find the bag. The film takes place almost entirely in one location and over one night. The floors of the club, its kitchen and its car park are the whole space; who is who keeps changing and the tension comes from the confinement. It is adapted from a French film and the structure is largely preserved. Kamal Haasan leads and performs some of the fight sequences himself. The cutting is fast and the running time kept short. Who it's for: those who like single-location thrillers and Tamil action cinema. Who it's not for: viewers looking for an original plot; the film follows the source closely.
