What Tokyo Trash Baby Is About
Miyuki waits tables in a Tokyo cafe and is fixated on Yoshinori, a scruffy young musician who lives in the flat above hers. Rather than speak to him she carries his rubbish home and goes through it: empty water bottles, styrofoam cups, the ends of takeaway meals. Ryuichi Hiroki shot it on DV and watches this strange intimacy with somebody else’s discards without ever passing judgement on her, in a city built on the assumption that things get thrown away. It was the first of the six films in Cinerocket’s Love Cinema series and opened on 7 October 2000, with Mami Nakamura leading a cast that includes Kazuma Suzuki, Ko Shibasaki and Tomorowo Taguchi.
