What Tonio Is About
Twenty one year old Tonio dies in a traffic accident and his parents are left behind; both are writers and he was their only child. The film follows what comes after that day: the delivery of the news, the hospital, the funeral, and through the months that follow the couple trying to reconstruct their son’s last days, asking who missed what, and what they cannot say to each other. Regret stands here not as an accusation but as a form the grief itself takes. Paula van der Oest’s hundred minute Dutch film was adapted from the book of the same name that A.F.Th. van der Heijden wrote for his own son. Pierre Bokma plays the father, Rifka Lodeizen the mother and Chris Peters plays Tonio. It opened on 22 September 2016.
