What Tough Enough Is About
Michael is fifteen when his mother's rich boyfriend leaves her and the two of them have to move from Zehlendorf, a comfortable part of Berlin, to Neukölln. At the new school a group led by Erol is on him immediately: protection money, beatings, the same squeeze every day. He tries to avoid it, then starts running drugs for protection, and ends up in the middle of exactly what he was fleeing. Detlev Buck adapted Gregor Tessnow's novel, and the film screened at the Berlin Film Festival in 2006. David Kross, then unknown, plays Michael in his first leading role. The film neither romanticises the district nor treats it as the only culprit.
