A powerful criminal organisation living off smuggling and bank robbery is preparing, with foreign help, to take the country; three very different men stand against it. One of them is an honest police inspector whose name has been dragged down, and clearing it puts him up against both the organisation and the brother of the woman he loves. Rajiv Rai wrote and directed, giving each of the three his own score to settle and his own tempo, and the film fills its three hours along those three lines. Naseeruddin Shah, Sunny Deol and Jackie Shroff are the trio, with Madhuri Dixit, Sonam and Sangeeta Bijlani opposite them, and Anupam Kher and Amrish Puri in the cast. The music is by Kalyanji Anandji and Viju Shah. It was made for two crore, took seventeen, became the third biggest earner of 1989 and won two prizes at the thirty-fifth Filmfare awards. The Turkish and English summaries in the record describe it as though it were two different films.
