Twilight of the Cockroaches

The cockroaches in Saito’s flat live at peace with their human host. He leaves them plenty of room and plenty of leftovers. In this easy period Naomi and Ichiro are planning to marry and start a family. Then a hard bitten stranger roach named Hans arrives. The news he brings is that war has broken out with the humans across the lawn. That news shakes both the couple’s relationship and the whole order of the colony. The film uses animation and live action together. The state of a community that believes its comfort will last is the real subject. It is built as an animation for adults. Hiroaki Yoshida’s hundred and five minute Japanese film was completed in 1987.
