Emmanuel Laurent’s 2010 documentary is about the friendship between François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard, and then about the end of it. Antoine de Baecque, a former editor of Cahiers du Cinéma, wrote and narrated it. It moves through the success of The 400 Blows and Breathless, the American cinema both men were in love with, and Jean-Pierre Léaud, who acted for both and stands here as the living link between them. It arrives finally at 1973, when Godard sent Truffaut a letter attacking Day for Night and accusing him of selling out, Truffaut answered at twenty pages, and neither of them ever repaired it. de Baecque is a film historian who has written biographies of both men.
