What Two Times Lotte Is About
Two nine year old girls who meet at summer camp are identical apart from their hair: the unruly Luise and the quiet, well-mannered Lotte. They have never seen each other before, but they soon work out that they are twins; their parents separated years ago and each kept one of them. At the end of the camp the two decide to change places; Lotte curls her hair, Luise plaits hers, and each goes off to a home she has never seen. The point is not only curiosity but bringing their parents back together. Josef von Báky’s hundred and five minute German film was adapted from Erich Kästner’s novel, and the author himself appears in it as the narrator.
