The documentary follows the daily order of Jake Williams, who lives alone in the remote forests of Aberdeenshire. The man is seen across all four seasons: getting by on very little, setting himself odd projects, floating a raft, hauling a caravan up into a tree. There is almost no speech in the film; time, the weather and the sound of the forest become the account itself. Ben Rivers shot it on sixteen millimetre black and white stock and processed it by hand, which is why the image is scratched and blotched. The production started from the themes of Knut Hamsun’s novel Pan and runs eighty eight minutes. It was completed in 2012 and presents solitude not as a problem but as a way of living.
