What Umrao Jaan Is About
Muzaffar Ali’s 1981 film adapts Mirza Hadi Ruswa’s 1899 Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada. Amiran is kidnapped as a child and sold into a kotha in Lucknow, where she is raised on music, dance and etiquette and becomes Umrao Jaan, among the most celebrated courtesans of her time. That she is also a poet is the film’s central fact: she is both the woman being looked at and the one doing the writing. The decline of nineteenth-century Lucknow is not background here but part of the story itself. Rekha won the National Film Award for best actress for it, and the film has since been restored in 4K.
