What Under Ten Flags Is About
In 1941 Allied merchant ships are being sunk by the disguised German raider Atlantis. Painted as a freighter, she sank or captured more than twenty ships between May 1940 and November 1941 before the British cruiser Devonshire sank her. Duilio Coletti’s Italian-American production works loosely from that real cruise. Van Heflin plays Captain Bernhard Rogge and Charles Laughton the British intelligence officer set against him. Dino De Laurentiis produced, and the film came out in 1960. The picture builds Rogge as a man who wants to fight the war by its rules, which is the film’s own framing rather than a settled verdict on him.
