Lynsey Addario What Underfire: The Untold Story of Pfc. Tony Vaccaro Is About
Tony Vaccaro went into the Second World War as an infantryman and took photographs at the front. He carried a camera bought for forty seven dollars, smuggled in with him, and developed the negatives at night inside his helmet. The archive that came out of it is counted among the fullest and closest records of the war; that assessment is the documentary’s own. The film sets those photographs beside the account of the man who took them. The tension between being a soldier and being a photographer stands at the centre. Deciding what to photograph becomes a responsibility of its own inside a war. Lynsey Addario also speaks in the film. Max Lewkowicz’s seventy nine minute American documentary was completed in 2016.
