What Unico in the Island of Magic Is About
A small unicorn named Unico comes up against an evil magician who binds people to himself with his magic. Those in his hands are no longer themselves; they have been turned into a kind of puppet, and bringing them back falls to Unico. The account speaks to children, but it does not soften fear or loss; some of its passages are quite dark for a young audience. At the centre of the film is the idea of giving oneself up in order to save someone else. It was adapted from a comic series. The account separates good and bad sharply, yet it also shows what the good costs. Despite its short length the film moves as though divided into more than one part. Moribi Murano’s ninety one minute Japanese animated film was completed in 1983.
