Philippe Cohen-Solal M Michael Cudahy What Vinylmania: When Life Runs at 33 Revolutions Per Minute Is About
Next to digital music the record was taken to be finished. It did not disappear. The documentary goes looking for the reason. The director Paolo Campana sets out. Campana is a disc jockey based in Turin. He travels through eleven cities. London, San Francisco, Tokyo and Prague are among them. New York is on the route as well. Along the way he talks to collectors. He visits the plants where records are pressed. He meets sleeve designers too. Peter Saville is one of those names. So is Winston Smith. What they talk about is not only sound. The sleeve, the smell, the weight and the sense of owning something all come into it. Philippe Cohen-Solal also appears in the seventy five minute film, an Italian production Paolo Campana finished in 2012.
