What Visual Acoustics Is About
Julius Shulman was the photographer who carried modern architecture into the American mainstream, recording the work of nearly every significant modernist from the 1930s onward, Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner, Frank Gehry. Eric Bricker’s documentary is about the archive and about the man, with narration by Dustin Hoffman. The picture most people still carry of Southern Californian modernism is largely Shulman’s framing of it. Among the interviewees, the cinematographer Dante Spinotti describes how Shulman’s photograph of Case Study House number 22 fed into Michael Mann’s Heat. The film premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival in June 2008 and went on to win best documentary at Palm Springs and a grand jury prize at the Lone Star festival.
