What Voyage to the Beginning of the World Is About
An ageing director called Manoel travels across Portugal with his crew looking for the roots of Afonso, a well known French actor whose father emigrated from Portugal to France, and along the way Manoel keeps remembering his own youth. Manoel de Oliveira built a director figure who is more or less his own double and gave the part to Marcello Mastroianni. Shooting took place in 1996, when Oliveira was eighty nine. Mastroianni died in December 1996, some five months before the premiere, and this was his last film. At Cannes in 1997 it took the FIPRESCI prize outside competition, and the ecumenical jury paid tribute to Oliveira.
