What Wake Island Is About
December 1941. A small force of United States Marines stationed on a coral island in the Pacific comes under attack from the Japanese navy. No relief is coming and there will be no resupply. The men on the island decide to hold out with what they have. As the days pass the losses mount, and the call to surrender is turned down. John Farrow's film was shot only months after the events and released while the war was still on. It is therefore openly a piece of work made to raise morale. It was nominated for Oscars for best picture, best director, best supporting actor and screenplay. The historical detail is altered freely in the film.
