What Wake of the Red Witch Is About

There is an old quarrel between Captain Ralls and the Dutch shipping magnate Mayrant Sidneye. Two things are at stake: a woman named Angelique Desaix, and the gold in the hold of a ship called the Red Witch. Ralls sank the ship on purpose and the gold went down with it. Years later the two men face each other again in the East Indies. The past is told in pieces, and each piece makes the last one look darker. Edward Ludwig directs, with John Wayne as Ralls and Gail Russell as Angelique. It is adapted from Garland Roark's novel. It is a sea adventure whose air is closer to a story of regret than to an adventure.
