Christo V Vladimir Javacheff What Walking on Water Is About
After the death of his wife and partner Jeanne-Claude, Christo takes on his first major project: The Floating Piers, which the two of them had designed together years earlier. A walkway of interlocking polyethylene cubes wrapped in yellow cloth is laid across Lake Iseo in northern Italy, and when it opens more than a million people walk on it. Andrey Paounov’s documentary was assembled from over seven hundred hours of footage shot during construction; it uses no interviews, no voice-over and no reconstruction, only what happened. What comes out is less a portrait of an artist than the record of a building site: fights over permits, weather, crowds, and the moments when Christo’s patience with his own team runs out. The record dates it 2019; sources count it as a 2018 film.
