Walnut Bread

In rural Lithuania after the war the Šatai and the Kaminskai live next door to each other. When a cow sold to the Kaminskai dies, a coldness begins between the two houses. Andrius Šatas and Liuka Kaminskaitė grow up in the same place and fall in love. The film does not build the feud between families as a great conflict; it shows how a small event can go on for years. The account moves like a parable and tells states rather than events. Poverty and pride running into each other in the postwar countryside is the ground. The sixty eight minutes are used for a short and plain telling. Saulius Sipaitis and Doloresa Kazragytė appear in Arūnas Žebriūnas’s Soviet production, completed in 1977.
