Adapted from Kazys Boruta’s novel about Baltaragis and his mill, this is usually described as the first musical made in the Soviet Union. Pinčiukas, a devil thrown out of heaven after tiring of singing hosannas, strikes a bargain with the miller Baltaragis: he will work the mill and find him a magnificent wife in Marcelė, and in return he will claim the daughter born of that marriage. Arūnas Žebriūnas directs, Vyacheslav Ganelin composes and the poet Sigitas Geda writes the words, and the result became so popular in Lithuania that it was long called the country’s own Jesus Christ Superstar. What actually drives the film is not the devil’s mischief but the debt, a promise made over a mill that falls due years later in a young woman’s life.
