What The Beauty Is About

Nine-year-old Inga is the best loved girl in her block; she is always chosen as the beauty in games, and her mother and the other children make much of her. The title comes from that game, a Lithuanian children’s game in which a child dances in the middle of a circle and is paid compliments. Inga’s dream is to find a rare wild flower; then a new boy arrives in the yard and calls her ugly to her face, and she and her friends meet reality for the first time. Arūnas Žebriūnas directed. The film treats beauty as a label handed to you from outside and shows how quickly a child learns that. It is counted among the classics of Lithuanian cinema and runs seventy-one minutes.
