What Wanderers of the Desert Is About
A young teacher is posted to a forgotten village school in the middle of the desert. Arriving, he finds that most of the men have vanished and that those who remain are waiting for the ones who went. Legendary figures rising out of wells, children running through underground passages and rules nobody explains multiply by the day; the teacher too follows a summons and does not come back. Nacer Khemir’s ninety five minute Tunisian film draws on Arab storytelling and on Sufism, and rather than explaining its events leaves them as a condition. The director also appears in the film as an actor; it was completed in 1986.
