Way Back Home

Jung-yeon and her husband Jong-bae run a car body shop. When the business fails and the debts mount, she accepts a proposition from an acquaintance: carry a suitcase back from France and be paid for it. She finds out there is cocaine in the suitcase when she is detained at the airport. What follows is years in a women's prison in Martinique, in the Caribbean: she does not speak the language, she has no lawyer, her embassy does not engage, and at home her daughter is growing up. The subject is not really the drugs but a state that cannot reach its own citizen. Adapted from a true case. Pang Eun-jin directs, with Jeon Do-yeon in the lead, and part of it was shot in a real prison with real inmates.
