What We Come as Friends Is About

As South Sudan declares independence, Hubert Sauper flies in from France in a small homemade aeroplane he helped design. The plane lets him land in places nobody would take him, and there he talks with workers on the oil fields, with missionaries, with United Nations staff and with people losing their land. The film’s question is whether the people arriving as independence is declared really come as friends. It is the second film in the trilogy on Africa planned by the Austrian Sauper, after Darwin’s Nightmare. It made the fifteen-film shortlist for the Oscar for best documentary. The cast field in the record holds a single name, George Clooney; nothing in the sources I looked at places him in the film’s credits.
