What We Spin Around the Night Consumed by the Fire Is About
The title of Guy Debord’s last film is a Latin palindrome: we turn in the night and are consumed by fire. Debord announces at the outset, as narrator, that he will concede nothing to his audience’s taste or to the ruling ideas of his day. He then insults at length the spectator who comes to the cinema to forget his own dispossessed life, after which the film turns autobiographical: advertising brochures, fragments of other films, comics, aerial shots of Paris, tracking shots through Venice, photographs of friends. His voice runs over all of it, and the tone slides now and then into melancholy. Describing the avant-garde circles of fifties Paris, he says the thing that stays: that Paris no longer exists.
