Wee Willie Winkie

A British outpost in northern India in 1897. Little Priscilla, whose father has died, arrives with her mother at the garrison her grandfather commands. In a world built on rules, uniforms and distance, the child makes a place for herself, befriends a sergeant, and eventually comes face to face with the local leader the outpost is ranged against. John Ford directed it from Kipling, and it carries the colonial outlook of its moment, which is worth knowing going in. It is usually counted among Shirley Temple's best films. There is also this: Graham Greene lost a libel action over what he wrote about it, and the magazine that printed the piece was shut down. It remains one of the most famous court cases in the history of film criticism.
