What Welcome to Sajjanpur Is About
Unable to find work after his arts degree, Mahadev earns a living writing letters for the people in his village who cannot read or write. What he really wants is to be a novelist, but the job he has puts him in the middle of nearly everyone’s private life, and every line he writes can change somebody’s course. Shyam Benegal draws rural India with satire and with warmth: superstition, caste, election politics and how much room women are allowed. Shreyas Talpade leads. It makes you laugh and shows you how the village actually works.
