What Welcome to Sodom Is About
The documentary is set on a dump in Accra, the capital of Ghana, where electronic waste from the West is stripped, burned and mined for metal. According to the film, roughly two hundred and fifty thousand tonnes of discarded computers, phones and air conditioners arrive there every year. The crew spent more than three months with the people living on the site before shooting and built the account out of what the workers themselves say. Florian Weigensamer and Christian Krönes directed the ninety two minute Austrian production together, and it has also drawn criticism from academics, who argue that by presenting the place as an apocalyptic landscape the film gets a good deal of what is actually true about it wrong.
