What What Did You Do in the War, Daddy? Is About
Italy, 1943. An American unit is ordered to take a strategically placed town. The Italian soldiers there are ready to surrender, on one condition: they hold their festival first. The captain is against it and his lieutenant talks him round. The problem is that aerial reconnaissance is watching the area, so a battle has to be staged for the cameras. Headquarters sends an intelligence officer to find out what is going on. There is also the mayor's daughter, and the festival gets steadily more complicated. Blake Edwards directs, with James Coburn and Dick Shawn in the leads. A hundred and sixteen minutes. It gets at the war not through the enemy but through the absurdity of the chain of command.
