What The Return of the Pink Panther Is About
Blake Edwards's 1975 film follows a bungling inspector after a stolen diamond. A former thief is blamed. The inspector wrecks everything he touches. The film builds its comedy on chains of accidents; the narrative runs his superior's breakdown as a second line. Peter Sellers returned to the role. Christopher Plummer plays the thief. It is among the most watched films in the series. Who it's for: those who like classic slapstick. Who it's not for: viewers troubled by how the Asian manservant is drawn; that pattern reads badly today.
