What When Heroes Lie Is About
At the 2001 world championships in Lahti, six Finnish skiers were caught using banned substances and the host country lost its heroes inside a week. Arto Halonen’s documentary does not tell it as a scandal story but as the moment a long habit became visible: it traces doping back to the seventies, recalls the trial that began in 1998, and talks to skiers, coaches and specialists. That is where the film’s real argument sits, in the claim that the guilty party is not a set of individual athletes but the system that delivered them to that point. What happened at Salt Lake City a year later is treated as the continuation.
