Where Hands Touch

In Nazi Germany a fifteen year old girl born to a German mother and an African father tries to hide who she is. She grows close to a boy in the Hitler Youth. The film sets out to describe what Black children in Germany endured at the time, including sterilisation and the camps, a subject cinema has almost never touched. But its choice to carry that through a romance put it at the centre of an argument. Amma Asante wrote and directed. Amandla Stenberg and George MacKay lead. A real warning: the film was harshly criticised for the love story with a character in Nazi uniform, and the director argued it was not an absolution. Camp scenes and forced sterilisation are also handled directly. Watch it aware of that argument.
