What Where Is Freedom? Is About
Salvatore Lojacono, a barber, serves twenty years for a murder committed out of jealousy. He comes out to find he has neither a home nor a wife, and his wife's relatives receive him with an odd warmth that soon gives way to unpleasant facts about the past. Unable to fit himself to a changed world or to the hypocrisy around him, he decides he would rather go back behind bars. Totò carries it, and the credit reads Roberto Rossellini, but the shoot was a mess: he was often absent, Mario Monicelli shot the courtroom scene and Federico Fellini the final one. It reached cinemas two years after production.
