White Snake

In a village of snake hunters, a woman is found who has lost her memory. Her name is Blanca. As the young hunter Xuan tries to help her, it emerges that she is in fact a thousand-year-old snake spirit, and the two of them are caught in the middle of a war between worlds. The subject is not the love story but its impossibility across species. Can Blanca choose to be human, and what would Xuan do if he knew? The film defers the answer to the next life. The form shows exactly the moment Chinese animation grew confident: an image built out of water, silk, mountain mist and fight choreography, fusing computer animation with the aesthetics of traditional painting. The source is the Legend of the White Snake, one of China's oldest and most retold folk tales. The film does not narrate the familiar part; it builds the prelude, so the audience begins a story whose end it already knows. It was produced by Light Chaser Animation and became the studio's first internationally noticed work. Amp Wong and Zhao Ji directed. The voice cast includes Zhang Zhe, Yang Tianxiang and Tang Xiaoxi. Who it is for: viewers who like East Asian fantasy and visually ambitious animation. Who it is not for: anyone after character depth; the narrative rushes in places and the emotional turns lag behind the imagery.
