Green Snake

Verta, the White Snake's sister, fails to save her and falls into a place called Asuraville: a city that gathers beings who have not died but cannot return, and that is reshaped by constant disasters. There is a way out and nobody knows what it is. The subject is not revenge but obsession itself. Verta is so locked onto finding her sister that she pushes away the chance to leave Asuraville again and again, and that is exactly the city's rule: people stay because they cannot let go of what they are fixed on. The form is far harder and more modern than its predecessor: a ruined city, motorbikes, sandstorms and machines close to mecha. It can be read as Chinese animation testing mythology in the language of contemporary dystopia. It is the sequel to White Snake and the second film Light Chaser Animation built in the same universe. In China it outgrossed the first and consolidated the studio's decision to continue its own mythological series. Amp Wong directs. The voice cast includes Tang Xiaoxi, Zhang Fuzheng and Wei Chao. Who it is for: viewers who like animation that blends East Asian mythology with modern action. Who it is not for: anyone who has not seen the first film; the narrative starts exactly where that one stopped and reminds you of nothing.
