Who Wants to Kill Jessie?

Beruškova, a scientist, builds a machine that projects a sleeping person's dreams onto a screen; the point is to erase bad ones. Her husband Jindřich tries it on himself. What he dreams is Jessie, a comic-book heroine, with a superman and a cowboy beside her. When the machine fails, the three of them come out of the dream and into the streets of Prague. They cannot speak; what they say appears in the air as speech bubbles. The cowboy shoots, the strong man goes through walls, and everybody wants Jessie. Václav Vorlíček directs the Czechoslovak comedy; eighty-one minutes, with Olga Schoberová as Jessie. The film really does put the speech bubbles on the screen, and it is one of the few things from the sixties that carried comics into cinema that way.
