What A Nice Plate of Spinach Is About
Václav Vorlíček's 1977 Czechoslovak comedy, written with his regular collaborator Miloš Macourek, is a piece of gleeful science-fiction nonsense. Two small-time crooks fresh out of prison, Jarda Zemánek and Franta Liška, fall in with the owner of a beauty salon. He wants a copy of a machine built at a research institute to rejuvenate old livestock, so that he can sell lost youth to wealthy clients. There is one condition: no spinach during the treatment, because spinach multiplies the machine's effect. It is a typical example of the strange comic universe Vorlíček and Macourek built together, and Iva Janžurová appears in a double role as both the mother and the daughter.
