Whose Is This Song?

The documentary goes after a song. The idea comes to her at a dinner. There are people from different countries at the table. The musicians start playing a tune. Everyone says the tune belongs to their own country. Adela Peeva sets out on that. She goes to Turkey, Greece and Macedonia. Albania, Bosnia, Serbia and Bulgaria are on the route as well. She finds the same tune everywhere. But the words and the meaning change from place to place. In one place it is a love song, in another a hymn. Somewhere else it is sung as a march. People tell long histories for where the song came from. In some places the reaction hardens when the question is asked. Adela Peeva directed the seventy minute documentary. The Belgian and Bulgarian coproduction was finished in 2003.
