Why Not!

Coline Serreau's first feature is about three people sharing a house in the Paris suburbs. Fernand runs the household, Louis makes music, and Alexa is the one who earns. Fernand and Alexa have come out of marriages that ended badly, and Louis is a young bisexual musician who could not get on with his parents. The film sets this up neither to defend it nor to explain it, presenting it simply as a household that works, down to how the chores are divided. The curiosity of the people around them, a police inspector above all, supplies the pressure from outside. That it was made in 1977 and never obliges anyone to account for themselves is what still makes it unusual.
