What Wild Flowers Is About
Seven folk ballads run one after another: a dead lover knocking at the door in the night, a mother who loses her child to a water spirit, a promise made in a graveyard. Nothing connects the stories; what connects them is a shared dread, and colour, and light. This is the dark end of Czech folklore, the lament rather than the fairy tale. F. A. Brabec's 2000 film comes from the collection of ballads Karel Jaromír Erben published in 1853, twelve poems in the book and seven of them here. Brabec is a cinematographer, and the film talks in pictures: framing, sound and season do most of the work instead of dialogue.
