What Wilderness: Part 1 Is About
Adapted from Ah, Wilderness, the only full-length novel Shuji Terayama wrote, published in 1966, the film moves the story into a near-future Shinjuku. Shinji has just come out of a juvenile detention centre, carries his father’s suicide underneath his anger, and is looking for the person who betrayed him. Kenji, a half-Korean half-Japanese barber, stutters and cannot make himself part of anything; everyone calls him Barikan, the word for hair clippers. The two meet at a run-down boxing gym, become friends, and hold on to boxing in a situation that offers them nothing else. Yoshiyuki Kishi shot it in two parts, the first of which opened on 7 October 2017, and it played at the Busan International Film Festival. Masaki Suda and Yang Ik-june star.
