What William S. Burroughs: A Man Within Is About
Yony Leyser's documentary looks at the contradictions in the writer William S. Burroughs: the man taken for the coldest face of the Beat generation, known for his guns and his cats, open about his addiction, and lonely underneath all of it. With Peter Weller narrating, figures including David Cronenberg, Gus Van Sant, Iggy Pop and Jello Biafra describe how far his influence reached beyond literature into music and film. The film does not skip the darkest event in his life: in Mexico in 1951 he shot and killed his wife, Joan Vollmer, and afterwards described it as an accident. By his own account that death was what made him a writer, and the documentary neither excuses it nor turns it into sensation. What is left is a man who wore hardness like armour and had trouble putting it down as he got older.
