What Willy the Sparrow Is About
Vili fakes an illness so he will not have to sit a maths test. Left at home, he starts shooting at sparrows out of the window with an air rifle. The kindly old woman who feeds the birds turns out to be an actual fairy, and she sets about making something better of him. József Gémes's Hungarian animation does not proceed by lecturing. Instead of punishment it uses exchange, putting the boy inside the thing he has been doing. The seventy six minutes are made for children, but the film never softens how dangerous a city is if you are a bird.
