Winky's Horse

Winky is a small girl who has just moved to the Netherlands from China. She has no language, struggles at school, and wants one thing: a real horse. Horses are expensive and her family cannot buy one. But it is the season of Sinterklaas, and Winky writes to him directly with her request. There is also a bad-tempered man in the village who looks after horses. Mischa Kamp's Dutch film was made for children and was much loved in the country; a sequel followed. Ebbie Tam plays Winky and Jan Decleir the man with the horses. The telling shows an immigrant child settling in without delivering a lesson. The Sinterklaas custom is at the centre of the film and is explained for viewers from elsewhere as well.
