What Winter Flies Is About
In Olmo Omerzu’s 2018 Czech film, the excessively self-assured Mára and the slightly odd Heduš set out into the frozen countryside looking for adventure, by car of course, because Mára will be fifteen soon. The stories they tell along the way are consistently larger than anything that actually happens to them, and the film follows without ever catching them out. The winter flies of the title are the stubborn ones that still turn up buzzing in the cold, which is also what the film says about the indescribable bond of boyhood friendship and the urge to experience something without knowing what. Tomáš Mrvík plays Mára and Jan František Uher plays Heduš.
