What Without a Clue Is About
Sherlock Holmes is in fact a fiction invented by Doctor Watson, and when the public demands to see him Watson hires an out of work actor to play the part. The premise carries the film on its own: the clever man must stay in the shadows while the fool collects the applause. Michael Caine plays a drunk and incompetent Holmes with evident delight while Ben Kingsley seethes. The mystery itself is ordinary, which hardly matters. It moves in the polite register of British comedy of its period.
