What Without a Trace Is About

Aurelia walks out on her factory job and her drug-dealing boyfriend, taking his money with her. At a truck stop in Ciudad Juárez she runs into Ana, a fast-talking smuggler of fake Mayan artefacts with a corrupt policeman behind her, and the two set off together towards the Yucatán. María Novaro shapes it as a road movie but is far less interested in the men following them than in the two women coming to know each other and working out what they want by the end of the road. The shoot crosses the whole country, from Ciudad Juárez to Veracruz and Cancún, and parts of the film are spoken in Maya. Aitana Sánchez-Gijón and Tiaré Scanda take the leads, and it won the Latin American cinema award at Sundance in 2001.
